Elephant poaching on the rise in the Kruger

The KNP is said to be hit the hardest by poaching, given that it is the largest game reserve in South Africa… the sanctuary is larger in area than Israel.

Last year, 557 poached rhinos were found in the KNP between January and the end of August, while 458 were recorded this year during the same period.

Molewa also said that rhino poaching has increased in KwaZulu-Natal, Free State and the Northern Cape when compared to the same period of last year.

However, despite the increase in these provinces, the overall number of poached rhino in the country, declined.

Moreover, the Minister also highlighted an increase in elephant poaching… “It is also of concern that we have begun experiencing an increase in elephant poaching,”

According to News24, Molewa also said that even though rhino poaching shows a decline, 36 elephants have been poached in the KNP since January.

A total of 414 alleged poachers have been arrested in South Africa since January. Of this total, 177 were made in the KNP and 237 in the rest of the country. A total of 94 firearms have been seized inside the park.

SANParks Acting Head of Communication, William Mabasa addressed the situation at the KNP, stating that SA is home to the African elephant with several parks under SANParks being home to these gentle giants. “The African elephant also forms part of the big five and is a sought after sighting in any park.”

Mabasa says “SANParks has experienced some instances of poaching in the KNP and although elephants are poached for their ivory, they are also poached for meat, leather, and body parts. The illegal wildlife trade puts elephants increasingly in danger, because it is perceived to be a low risk and high profit endeavour.”
